St. Valentines is Not the Patron Saint of Love

Contrary to popular belief, Saint Valentines is not the Catholic patron saint of love. If ‘he’ isn’t what we think he is, then who do Catholics pray to when they need guidance in matters of the heart?

For years, popular media has hailed St. Valentines to be the patron saint of love. Although Valentines Day is dedicated to couples, partners, and spouses, and the general celebration of love, the holiday was never named after a patron saint. In fact, St. Valentines was never the patron saint of anything, at all.

One of three Saint Valentines: Not the Saint You Were Looking For

Nothing romantic about that getting beheaded, is there?

If you’re a young, single Catholic hoping to find true love this year, or if you are a young Catholic who is very much in love, fortunately, you won’t have to intercede your prayers through our beloved, beheaded martyr. According to the Church, these are the Patron saints of love and its many forms.

St. Anne is directly related to Jesus; in fact, she is His grandmother. Her role as a faithful wife and Mary’s primary guide for being a good, devoted wife propelled her into being the icon of a good spouse. Officially, she is the patron saint of both married and unmarried women. When it comes to the matters of the heart, seek her help and guidance.

Although St. Philomena died a young virgin, her devotion to her faith and her bravery in the face of death makes her one of the most iconic women in Catholic history of sainthood. Yet another female icon, prayers interceded through St. Philomena may be of the following nature: one, you are in love with someone you find difficult to have; two, you want to strengthen your young relationship; or three, you are a woman who is facing difficulty in having children.

If your prayers touch any of the above mentioned concerns, St. Philomena is ready to hear and help you.

For men, here are two important names to remember: St. Edward the Confessor and St. Joseph.

For young men hoping to become better lovers, friends, partners, or future husbands, send your prayers of guidance to the Father through St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus Christ in His youth. St. Joseph serves as a beautiful example of a man who took the role of being a father seriously, and is also a beautiful role model for stepfathers and foster fathers.

For men in difficult marriages, St. Philomena’s male counterpart is St. Edward the Confessor. He is specifically known as the patron saint of difficult marriages.

Bonus! Is the love of your life a lost cause? Pray to Saint Anthony de Padua. Although St. Anthony’s title of being the patron saint of lost causes is often associated with lost missions or plans that fell through, he is also intercedes prayers from people who seek guidance and comfort from their failed marriages or relationships.
