Why a Good Cry is the Perfect Antidote!

I remember sobbing my heart out when I first watched, “Life is beautiful.” Emotional moments in a movie, when well portrayed, sometimes get to us, don’t they?

To be able to watch a movie alone or read a book that triggers emotions is sometimes the best way to enjoy your solitude. Some of us are more sensitive and feel deeply. It also depends on our existing emotional frame, with other factors adding complexity. For example, a rain-drenched quiet afternoon could add another layer to the emotional triggers.

Science explains how there are three main types of tears — Basal, Reflex, and Psycho-emotional. The basal tears are responsible for creating a thin film over the eye that keeps it moist. The Reflex tears are produced by the tear glands when there are irritants like dust or stinging vapors while chopping onions! The psycho-emotional tears are brought on by intense emotional moments of happiness, sadness, empathy, or even laughter.

Do you notice how we feel lighter after having a good cry? Sometimes we need days of crying to heal over the loss of someone or a break up with a partner who meant the world to us. In every scenario, tears can heal and help us move on. It enables you to make peace with the situation or person instead of dwelling on the negative feelings. You recollect the incident later, perhaps in an objective manner. Overcoming your grief also helps you distance yourself away from any future hurt that an individual or situation could inflict on you. Some of us may need to go through the process a few times before understanding why we engage with such people or scenarios.

Tears can help you reflect, introspect, and keep you sane. Crying is also a type of non-verbal communication, a plea for help. Think about the time when you were deeply distressed, didn’t you wish your loved one was nearby to comfort you? Did images of a parent or a sibling or a partner flash across your mind? When there are caring friends or family nearby, crying out and being your vulnerable self with them gives you a warm blanket of comfort that helps you recover from life’s battles with a bit more ease, rather than fighting it alone.

Even if you were to fight it alone, tears help you release the stress. It enables you to fast track your healing and dial back to your routine. More often than not, you bounce back to your usual cheerful self quickly! It is for this reason that it is essential to give yourself permission to grieve and cry. When all your emotions come pouring out, your mind resets and functions properly in your daily life. It urges you to be a survivor who has endured and let the event become a part of you rather than consume you.

It is okay to be vulnerable and cry when you feel sad. However, if crying does not do its job of regulating your emotions or helping you move on, then it is time to look closer.

If, for some reason, you are experiencing frequent crying bouts or struggling with an issue for which crying is always a coping mechanism without any positive progress, please don’t be afraid to seek help or create a change in your environment. Don’t pull away from a chance that can help you fight your battles and challenge yourself to embrace uplifting change.
