Because in order to believe, one would have to know that there was something to believe in.

How does the wolf choose which trail to advance through when it cannot see or understand that which it is asked of?

Further — how would the animal have the instinctive drive without ever having the call of the wind flush against its ear?

One does not know what it should be afraid of when being afraid was that which was never known.
