Simple WaysTo Enhance Your Career Prospects

If I had to guess I would say I have helped thousands of people in career advancement/transition/development and the thing I keep going back to is an answer to the question…”What do you really want to be doing?”

What very few people do before getting into all this tactical stuff is to address the concepts of joy, passion, and purpose.

Why are you here? What are you meant to be doing? What will bring you happiness? What can you do to help and serve other people? Why can’t you make money doing something you love?

Most people either do not think about this or they believe that “work” just needs to be a grind and a paycheck and that they have no right to expect both. This is patently incorrect. The notion that joy and work cannot intermingle is false.

I’m not saying that everyone can find this magical balance, but I am saying everyone should try.

I was married with three young children and a new start-up business for many years. I know what it’s like to not breathe or sleep for days. I understand that life can prop you up on a treadmill with a carrot on a stick where food, shelter and massive monthly bills can demand your attention at the expense of your own well being.

However…if you are asking the question about how to enhance your career prospects, you have at least some time to breathe and reflect so let’s take advantage of this. Step out of your own shoes for a sec and look back in at yourself.

This exercise alone could change your life. Most people who go through it, call me back to tell me how powerful and simple it was. They also share how emotionally taxing it was. It’s really simple, but it’s hard.

The difficulty is what makes the exercise so valuable. You are forced to be brutally honest with yourself about very important things. Most people don’t make a habit of being honest with themselves. Most people deflect and avoid honest self-talk.
