Main Functions of Human Resource Management

There are several features of Human Resources today. The major functions of Human Resources are recruitment and selection, human resource development through training programs, policy formulations in benefit of organization and employee both, total rewards basically handling compensation and other benefits, labor relations with employees, and risk management.

Now let’s take a look at these functions of HR and how each impacts an organization.

HR is mostly responsible for ensuring that employees receive the appropriate training (whether in-house or off-site) to perform their jobs accurately. Thus, making the employees equipped to achieve the desired departmental and company goals and objectives. The organization encourages its employees to take advantage of the tuition reimbursement benefit to further their education so as to acquire skills and knowledge for the betterment of the company and increase the efficiency of operations as a whole.

Globalization has forced human resource managers to adopt various new methods of offering compensation and benefits to a company’s employees. Human resource management also involves educating employees about non-traditional benefits packages, such as telecommuting, flex time, parental leave for parents of newborns and tuition compensation for adult students.

Human resource managers must understand how to accomplish the various administrative tasks that come with the global workforce. The managers must communicate the policies behind payroll enrollment, expense reports, vacation time and health insurance benefits to employees when they come on board and when management decides to change these policies. They must also deal with reassigning or terminating employees whose job functions are no longer required.

The employee relations team seeks to associate the employee’s needs and rights with the needs of the organization. Issues like: discrimination issues and sexual harassment claims are matters that are handled by the labor relations department of a company. Employers must stay in consent with the law to make sure that every employee is treated equally.

The risk management team and the other department managers work proactively in detecting risk items that could pose a threat to the organization and the work area within the company. Health care institutions, in particular, should take extra precautions in providing a safe work environment for its workers as well as its clients and customers. HR should provide safety training sessions and issue handbooks to its employees to educate them on risk management issues.
