6 Tips for Startups

When creating a marketable and successful startup, there is plenty of research available to help you make it through. However, some tips may not apply to you or your startup like, having an office space or employees. You might be a freelancer starting a new project and need some help turning your ideation into your income. We are here to help you and provide you with tips that anyone from any business phase can attempt to get their startups started.

Brand with purpose. Since the beginning, Unrivaled has always been mobile-first; and we’ve ridden the wave of mobile’s dominance ever since. We’re grateful to receive the bulk of our new business through client referrals and friends. We do more than mobile apps — website design and development, branding, SEO, community building — but it’s our mobile brand and expertise that gets people in the door.

Not everyone is your client. If a potential new client tries to lowball you or asks for deep discounts; leave now, I repeat leave now. Never reduce your price, just offer installments. Give your client an easier way to pay. It’s this weird, inverted ratio: the law of discounting. The deeper the discount or the more generous the favor we give, the more unrealistic clients’ demands will be. For some reason, the clients who demand discounts will never be happy with your work, and they’re hardly worth your time and aggravation.

Focus on customer acquisition. Without customers, you have no business. The sooner you figure out how to successfully manage and acquire clientele; the greater the chances are of your company making it. Once you identify different acquisition channels, work on optimization to lower your costs. It’s truly impossible to test every possible acquisition channel at first, both in terms of time required and cost, so focus on the most lucrative opportunities. Once you successfully scale those, you’ll have the financial capability to explore other channels. Sky’s the limit.

Your time is money. Every minute of your time has monetary value and I’m going to keep this short and sweet: time is money. Period. Nothing has more monetary value than your time. You only get so much of it every day, so take that into consideration when you are planning your schedule and day-to-day duties. Every second you spend doing something unrelated to your business is time (and money) wasted. If a project is going to deeply cut into your time (pockets) than you should decline the requested work and find something that makes more sense for you and your startup.

Just be honest. Honesty is going to take you and your startup to the top. Why? Because people will trust your judgement and you won’t disappoint anyone with unrealistic deadlines or launch dates. Be willing to make changes when something isn’t working on your end, make open suggestions to your clients “niche” market; your expertise is everything. Expect that circumstances will always change and you will have to adapt your plans. Giving critical feedback can be difficult but it must be done in order to make both yourself and your client happy.

Plan to succeed. If you’re not seeking investors or putting a huge sum of money into your business, you may not need an elaborate business plan, but you still do need a plan; one that specifies your end-goal. This allows you to blaze the trail and arrive at your destination. The plan will change as you progress and learn more about your customers and competition, but it will still help you stay focused and headed in the right directions. Do endless research. You must work towards your goal everyday whether it be watching Ted Talks or reading articles like this one (wink, wink). The more you can educate yourself on other startups and businesses that are doing what you want to achieve; the more likely you will succeed. Take yourself seriously and work towards it until you’ve exceeded your own expectations.
